Asheen’s artistic philosophy is rooted in the physical synergy between gypsum and resin—materials that represent the contrasting forces of the Icelandic landscape. Physically, gypsum is a sulfate mineral valued for its exceptional precision in detail reproduction. It provides a matte, stone-like foundation that mimics the density and opacity of volcanic basalt, anchoring each piece in a heavy, grounded silence.

In contrast, the resin acts as a translucent awakening of light. As a high-grade liquid polymer, it cures into a durable, high-gloss solid resistant to shattering and abrasion. This transparency allows light to illuminate the gypsum base, mirroring the refractive clarity of glacial ice or the shifting glow of the aurora. By uniting these elements, Asheen bridges the earthy permanence of stone with the luminous clarity of light —resulting in work that is ancient in spirit and refined in form.

Material care

Each piece of Asheen is a deliberate balance of stone and lustre. To maintain the elemental integrity of your objects, I recommend the following curatorial care:

The Surface: To preserve the matte texture of the gypsum and the clarity of the resin, clean with a soft, dry microfibre cloth.

The Elements: While inspired by the wild, these objects are designed for the stability of the indoors. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or high humidity to preserve the resin’s refractive brilliance.

Thermal Sensitivity: The materials are sensitive to extreme heat. While the surface can accommodate a cup of tea, avoid placing objects near open flames or high-temperature heat sources. These creations are not intended for mechanical washing.

A Manual Ritual: A soft, damp cloth may be used on the resin surface; however, avoid abrasive chemicals or immersion in water. Treat the gypsum with the same care as raw stone—avoiding oils or liquids that may permeate its porous mineral structure.

Sustainability & Provenance

Asheen is deeply rooted in the preservation of the landscape that inspires it. I prioritize the use of eco-conscious resins that offer high structural durability with a reduced environmental footprint. By sourcing natural gypsum and mineral pigments, I ensure that each piece remains an authentic, low-impact extension of the earth. In my Reykjavík studio, every creation is hand-cast in small batches, minimizing industrial waste and honoring the slow, intentional rhythm of artisanal production.
